What We Believe About Change

Change for any Christian is basically about becoming more like Christ. Our number one priority is growing in intimacy with Jesus Christ, to know him better and relate to him more genuinely as our personal Lord and Savior.
Our experiences and struggles are as unique as we are. For those affected by homosexuality, Exodus firmly believes and has seen that people who struggle with same-sex attractions can and do go on to experience a life free from a gay identity and behaviors. This can include healthy, satisfying heterosexual relationships. This does not happen overnight and is not the result of any particular experience or technique.
In seeking a better understanding of ourselves, our feelings and our purpose in light of God’s truth, we believe that obedience to His Word leads us into the best kind of life. For some that will include marriage to a partner of the opposite sex, for others it can mean life as a single. Either way, the real change is what happens in our hearts as we submit ourselves to Christ.
Our identity isn’t defined by whatever shape our temptations take, but by Christ.
The “Gay Gene” Theory
Exodus International believes that homosexuality is not God’s intent for human sexuality. It is, however, one of many temptations that occurs naturally among a fallen and imperfect humanity. We believe that many different factors may contribute to a person’s struggle taking this particular shape.
Exodus affirms that all legitimate research has failed to provide credible evidence that homosexual attractions are solely or primarily caused by a person’s physiology. This is evidenced by the failure to identify a genetic sequence common among same-sex-attracted individuals, the existence of identical twins who do not share a homosexual orientation, and most of all by the many people who have gone on to live a life beyond a once-held gay identity.
Reparative Therapy
Exodus International believes there are many psychological factors that can affect the development of sexual identity and attractions. While therapy cannot offer a “cure” for SSA, Exodus recognizes that Christ-centered counseling can be a powerful tool for developing a better understanding of one’s self and adopting healthier relational and behavioral patterns.
Exodus affirms that it is helpful and not harmful for counselors to help people explore alternative responses to same-sex attraction, especially when those options are pursued with Christ-centered goals and realistic expectations.
